At Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre, we believe that the most precious learning often happens when we step away from the screen and into the natural world. On a crisp June morning at our preschool Blacktown, you’ll often find our little learners exploring the wonders of the earth: and today, our focus is on the humble pinecone.
Mathematics doesn’t always need a textbook or a plastic toy. In fact, we find that a nourishing environment is best created through "loose parts": natural materials that invite curiosity and open-ended play. Whether your child is in our Penguins room (0-3 years) or preparing for the big transition in our Koalas room (3-5 years), pinecones offer a tactile, sensory-rich way to build early numeracy skills.
In this post, we’ll explore why natural items are so powerful for shaping young minds and how we use them at our centres in Liverpool, Blacktown, and Prestons to make maths both fun and deeply educational.
The Magic of Natural Materials in Early Learning
As a family-owned small business, we take a meticulous approach to the resources we provide. We follow a "Children First" policy, which means every activity is designed to support the individual development of each child. Why do we choose pinecones over plastic blocks?
- Sensory Engagement: Pinecones have a unique texture, smell, and weight. For a child in the Penguins room, feeling the rough scales of a pinecone is a sensory adventure that grounds them in the present moment.
- Sustainability: Using what nature provides teaches our children respect for the environment, a key part of our commitment to multiculturalism and community values.
- Versatility: A pinecone can be a tree in a small-world play scene, a weight on a scale, or a counter in a maths game.
At Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre, we see ourselves as being in a dedicated partnership with our families. We want to share these simple, growth-oriented activities so you can continue the learning journey at home in Prestons or Liverpool.

Counting with the Penguins (Ages 0-3)
In our Penguins room, maths is all about "one-to-one correspondence." This is a fancy way of saying that a child understands that one object equals the number "one."
We set up nourishing invitations to play where toddlers can pick up a pinecone and place it into a muffin tin or a cardboard egg carton. As they drop each one, our educators gently count aloud: "One… two… three…" This repetitive, joyful interaction is how we begin building capacity for more complex concepts later on.
Try this at home:
Next time you're on a winter walk near your home in Blacktown or Liverpool, collect a few pinecones. Back at home, grab two baskets. Ask your child to "move three pinecones to the empty basket." It’s a simple, fun way to practice counting while developing those all-important fine motor skills.
Advanced Numeracy in the Koalas Room (Ages 3-5)
As children grow into our Koalas room, our School Readiness Program takes center stage. Here, pinecone maths becomes a bit more strategic. We move beyond simple counting and into:
- Sorting and Classifying: The children might sort pinecones by size: from the tiniest "baby" pinecone to the biggest "grandpa" pinecone. This introduces the concept of seriation (ordering objects by a measurable attribute).
- Estimation: "How many pinecones do you think will fit in this wooden bowl?" We encourage our Koalas to make a guess (an estimate) and then count them out to see how close they were.
- Patterning: Using pinecones and other natural items like leaves or stones to create sequences (e.g., Pinecone – Leaf – Pinecone – Leaf).
Our meticulous curriculum ensures that by the time your child leaves our preschool Blacktown or our centres in Prestons and Liverpool, they have a solid foundation in these core mathematical concepts.

Connecting to the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)
Our programs are not just about play; they are designed to meet the rigorous standards of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). When your child is counting pinecones, they are working towards several key outcomes:
- Outcome 4 (Confident and Involved Learners): Children develop a range of skills and processes such as problem-solving, inquiry, experimentation, and investigation. By exploring the properties of pinecones, they are becoming little scientists and mathematicians.
- Outcome 5 (Effective Communicators): Children begin to understand how symbols and pattern systems work. Using numeral cards (the symbol) to represent a pile of pinecones (the quantity) is a huge leap in cognitive development.
We are committed to providing a nourishing environment that unleashes the full potential of every child. Whether we are in the classroom or our purpose-built outdoor areas, the focus remains on shaping young minds for a bright future.
