At Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre, we believe that every child is a natural-born scientist. Their eyes widen at the sight of a frost-covered leaf, and their tiny hands are always ready to reach out and discover the "why" behind the "how." As the winter chill settles into the air across our beautiful communities, we see a precious opportunity to transform the cold weather into a nourishing season of discovery.
Whether you are part of our family at our early learning centre Blacktown, our vibrant hub in Liverpool, or our community in Prestons, we are committed to providing a meticulous and growth-oriented environment where learning and fun go hand-in-hand.
This winter, we are leaning into our "Winter Wonders & Local Roots" theme by bringing the magic of science right to the fingertips of our little learners. Below, we’ve curated a collection of engaging, safe, and utterly magical winter science experiments designed to spark curiosity in your preschooler.
The Magic of Winter STEAM
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) isn't just for high schoolers. In our preschool Blacktown and Liverpool programs, we integrate these concepts early to help children build capacity for critical thinking and problem-solving. By exploring frozen textures and melting points, children aren't just playing: they are shaping young minds for a lifetime of inquiry.
As a family-owned small business, we take great pride in our children first policy. We know that a child who is encouraged to ask questions today is the innovator of tomorrow. Our nurturing environment is specifically designed to unleash this full potential through hands-on, sensory-rich experiences.

1. The Great Ice Fishing Adventure
This is a favorite in our Koalas (3-5 year old) room! It teaches children about the freezing point of water and how salt can change it: all while they think they are simply "fishing" for ice.
What you’ll need:
- A bowl of cold water
- Several ice cubes
- A piece of yarn or string
- A salt shaker
How to do it:
- Place the ice cubes in the bowl of water.
- Lay the string across the top of an ice cube.
- Invite your little scientist to sprinkle a bit of salt over the string where it touches the ice.
- Wait for about 30 seconds (this is a great time for a "waiting song"!).
- Gently lift the string: the ice cube will be "hooked"!
The "Why" behind the "How":
The salt melts a tiny layer of the ice. As the salt dissolves and moves away, the water refreezes, trapping the string inside the ice. It’s a precious lesson in chemistry wrapped in a game of skill!
2. Salt Tunnels and Colorful Ice Art
For a more artistic approach to science, we love this sensory activity. It’s perfect for families looking for an engaging afternoon at home in Prestons or Blacktown.
What you’ll need:
- Large blocks of ice (freeze water in Tupperware containers overnight)
- Table salt
- Liquid watercolors or food coloring
- Droppers or small spoons
How to do it:
- Place the ice blocks on a tray or in a large bin.
- Let the children sprinkle salt on top of the ice.
- Watch as the salt "eats" into the ice, creating deep tunnels and cracks.
- Use the droppers to add color to the salt sites. The color will travel deep into the ice, highlighting the intricate patterns.
This activity is a staple in our early learning centre Blacktown curriculum because it encourages fine motor skills (using the droppers) alongside scientific observation.

3. The "Instant" Snow Experiment (Sensory Play)
While we don't always get real snow in the suburbs of Liverpool or Blacktown, we can certainly make our own! This "fake snow" feels cool to the touch and provides hours of tactile exploration.
What you’ll need:
- Baking soda
- White hair conditioner (or shaving cream)
How to do it:
- Pour about two cups of baking soda into a bowl.
- Slowly add the hair conditioner, mixing with your hands until it reaches a "snow-like" consistency that can hold a shape.
- Add some small plastic animals or glitter for extra fun!
Why we love it:
At Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre, we place a high value on sensory play. It allows children to explore different textures, which is essential for brain development. This experiment also introduces the concept of chemical mixtures: how two different things can combine to make something entirely new!
Our Commitment to Your Child’s Journey
At Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre, we believe in long-term relationships with families and children. We don’t just watch your children for the day; we partner with you to ensure they are school-ready and emotionally resilient.
Our School Readiness Program is meticulously crafted to ensure that by the time your child leaves our Koalas room, they are confident, curious, and prepared for the big world of primary school. Whether you are looking for child care Liverpool or a trusted preschool Blacktown, we are here to support your family's unique needs.
We are a small family-owned business that understands the importance of multiculturalism and diversity. We respect individual beliefs and weave community values into everything we do, from our science experiments to our daily meal times.

Learning Through Technology
While we love the "messy" side of science, we also utilize Technology Integration to enhance the learning experience. In our rooms, we might use tablets to film a time-lapse of ice melting or use educational apps to look at real snowflakes under a microscope. This blend of traditional play and modern technology ensures our children are digitally literate and prepared for the future.
