Celebrating NAIDOC Week at Early Learning Centre Blacktown

As the crisp winter air settles over Blacktown, Liverpool, and Prestons, we find ourselves entering a truly precious time of year. Here at Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre, July isn't just about cozy jumpers and indoor play: it's a time for deep reflection, vibrant celebration, and meticulous learning as we observe NAIDOC Week.

This year, the 2026 theme is "50 Years of Deadly," marking a significant half-century milestone of celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. For our family-owned child care Blacktown service, this theme resonates deeply with our core mission: to provide a nourishing environment where every child’s potential is unleashed through respect, diversity, and community.

Why NAIDOC Week Matters in Early Childhood

At Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre, we believe that shaping young minds begins with a foundation of inclusivity. NAIDOC Week provides a beautiful opportunity to engage our Penguins (0-3 years) and Koalas (3-5 years) in the rich tapestry of First Nations history. By integrating these celebrations into our Early Years Learning Framework, we are not just teaching a lesson; we are building capacity for empathy and cultural competence.

We follow a Children First Policy, which means every activity is designed to be age-appropriate, engaging, and, most importantly, fun. Whether we are at our early learning centre Blacktown, our branch in Liverpool, or our community in Prestons, we are committed to fostering a lifelong respect for the land we play on and the people who have cared for it for over 60,000 years.

Exploring the 2026 Theme: "50 Years of Deadly"

In Aboriginal English, "deadly" is a term used to describe something excellent, strong, or impressive. Celebrating "50 Years of Deadly" allows us to talk to our children about what makes them strong and what makes our community great.

In our Koalas room, we have been discussing the "deadly" strengths of our Elders and the "deadly" futures of our children. We view ourselves as partners with our families in this journey, ensuring that the values of multiculturalism and individual beliefs are always upheld.

Our Nurturing NAIDOC Activities

Across all three of our locations: Liverpool, Blacktown, and Prestons: our educators have curated a week of growth-oriented experiences designed to connect children with First Nations cultures.

1. The "Generations of Deadly" Mural

Art is a powerful way for children to express complex ideas. This week, children in our child care Blacktown centre are creating a collaborative mural. Using their hands to create layered prints, they represent the past, present, and future.

  • Earth tones for our ancestors and Elders.
  • Bright yellows and oranges for our families today.
  • Vibrant greens and blues for the children: the next generation of "deadly" leaders.

2. Storytelling and Oral History

Literacy is a cornerstone of our School Readiness Program. We have sourced a beautiful collection of books by First Nations authors that focus on "Caring for Country" and "Family Strength."

3. Sensory Play: The Colours of Country

Our Penguins (0-3 room) are exploring culture through sensory play. Using natural ochres and textured sands, the toddlers engage their fine motor skills while educators introduce local language words for "sun," "earth," and "water." This technology integration (using interactive apps to hear correct pronunciations) ensures our learning is both modern and respectful.

Caring for Country: A Mindful Practice

A key USP of Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre is our commitment to mindful practices. During NAIDOC Week, we take this outdoors. We teach the children that "Caring for Country" means looking after our garden, our animals, and each other.

In our Prestons and Liverpool centres, we have been planting native "bush tucker" plants. This hands-on experience teaches children about the nourishing properties of the Australian landscape and the meticulous care required to sustain it.

A Partnership with Our Families

As a small family-owned business, we cherish the long-term relationships we build with our parents. We know that for many of you, NAIDOC Week is a time of personal pride and cultural celebration. We invite all families in Blacktown, Liverpool, and Prestons to share their stories with us.

  • Do you have a "deadly" family story?
  • Is there a local Elder you would like us to acknowledge?
  • Would you like to contribute to our multicultural family wall?

We value your participation and feedback! Your insights help us maintain an environment that is truly respectful of individual beliefs.
