As the crisp June air settles over Greater Western Sydney, the mornings in Blacktown have taken on a beautiful, misty chill. While the frost might be glistening on the grass outside, inside the walls of Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre, there is a different kind of glow. It’s the sound of gentle laughter, the smell of toasted sandwiches, and the sight of our youngest learners: the Penguins: starting their day with boundless energy.
At our preschool Blacktown location, we believe that winter isn't a time to slow down; it’s a time to get cozy, get creative, and keep those little bodies moving! For our children aged 0 to 3 years, staying active during the colder months is meticulous work that we take very seriously, ensuring every child feels nourished and safe.
In this edition of "A Day in the Life," we invite you to step inside our Penguin room and see how we turn a chilly winter morning into a growth-oriented adventure.
A Nurturing Start: The Morning Transition
For many families, the winter drop-off can feel a bit rushed as everyone tries to escape the cold. That’s why we place a precious emphasis on the "Warm Welcome." Our educators are waiting at the door, ready to transition each child from their parent’s arms into our nurturing environment.
We know that for toddlers, consistency is key. Whether you are visiting us at our Early Learning Centre Liverpool, Blacktown, or Prestons, you will find that our team values long-term relationships with both the children and their families. We aren't just a service; we are a partnership in your child’s upbringing.
Once the coats and beanies are tucked away in lockers, the day officially begins. The Penguin room is designed specifically for the developmental needs of 0-3 year olds, with soft mats, low-level furniture, and plenty of space for those first wobbling steps or confident toddler runs.
The Science of Play: Staying Active Indoors
When the "Big Backyard" is a little too damp for play, we bring the fun and learning inside. You might wonder: How do you keep a room full of toddlers active indoors without it becoming chaotic? The answer lies in our structured, School Readiness Program: even for our littlest Penguins!
The Famous "Penguin Waddle"
To celebrate our room's namesake, we often start the morning with the "Penguin Waddle." This isn't just a cute game; it’s a purposeful gross motor activity. By placing a small soft beanbag or plush toy between their knees and "waddling" to a target, toddlers are building core strength, balance, and coordination.

Indoor "Snowball" Toss
Since we don't get much real snow in Blacktown, we make our own! Using soft cotton balls or crumpled white tissue paper, the children practice their hand-eye coordination by tossing "snowballs" into baskets. These activities are essential for shaping young minds and helping them understand spatial awareness and "over-under" concepts.
Brain Building through Sensory "Messy" Play
Winter provides a unique opportunity for meticulous sensory exploration. In the Penguin room, we follow a Children First Policy, meaning we listen to what the children are interested in and build our curriculum around them.
Lately, our Penguins have been fascinated by textures. On June mornings, you might find our sensory tables filled with "frozen" blue jelly (safe for tasting!), or even just warm sudsy water for a "Winter Car Wash" with their toy trucks.

Messy play is a vital "brain workout." When a child squishes cold jelly or feels the warmth of soapy water, they are making millions of neural connections. At Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre, we celebrate these messy moments because we know they represent a child who is curious, engaged, and unleashing their full potential.
Nourishing Young Minds: Winter Wellness
We understand that winter also brings concerns about health and immunity. As a family-owned small business, we treat every child like our own. Our commitment to mindful practices includes ensuring the children are well-nourished with warm, healthy snacks that fuel their play.
During our mid-morning break, the Penguins enjoy:
- Warm oats with seasonal fruit.
- Vegetable-packed soups that are easy for toddlers to sip.
- Hydration stations (even in winter, keeping active means we need plenty of water!).
This focus on nutrition is part of our holistic approach to development. We aren't just looking after their education; we are building capacity for their overall health and wellbeing.
Finding Quiet in the Cozy Corners
Activity is important, but so is the ability to self-regulate. After a high-energy session of indoor "Ice Skating" (using paper plates on the carpet!), our educators lead the children to our precious reading nooks.

These quiet moments allow toddlers to reset. We utilize Technology Integration sparingly here: perhaps a soft background track of rainfall or a short, interactive video about how penguins live in the wild. This helps bridge the gap between abstract concepts and the real world, making learning interactive and engaging.
The EYLF Connection: Why It Matters
Everything we do, from the waddling to the painting, is mapped back to the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). Specifically, our winter morning routine focuses on Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing.
By providing a safe, warm space where they can move their bodies and explore new textures, we are helping them become strong in their social and emotional wellbeing. Whether you are at our preschool Blacktown, our Prestons location, or our Liverpool centre, this framework ensures your child is receiving a high-quality education that prepares them for the transition to school and beyond.
A Family Partnership Across Three Locations
