Little Learners, Big Days: Inside the Penguins Room (0–3s) at Rainbow Hut Liverpool

For babies and toddlers, every day is filled with meaningful discoveries. A smile exchanged with a familiar educator, the excitement of reaching for a new object, a song repeated at nappy change time, or the comfort of a predictable nap routine can all become important moments of learning and connection.

At Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre Liverpool, our Penguins room is designed for children aged from birth to three years. It is a precious space where babies and toddlers can feel safe, supported and encouraged to explore at their own pace.

As a small family-owned childcare service, we understand that choosing an early learning centre is a deeply personal decision. Families want more than supervision. They want a nourishing environment, responsive educators and a genuine partnership that respects each child’s individual needs.

We proudly welcome families across Liverpool, Prestons and Blacktown, with three locations: Liverpool, Blacktown and Prestons: supporting children and families through their early learning journey.

A gentle beginning to each day

The Penguins room has a calm, welcoming rhythm. Children may arrive at different stages of their morning: one child may be ready to explore, another may need comfort after separating from a parent, and another may be ready for breakfast or a sleep.

Our approach is guided by a children-first policy. Rather than expecting every child to follow exactly the same pattern, we observe children closely and respond to their cues, interests and wellbeing.

The beginning of the day may include:

  • A warm greeting from familiar educators
  • Time for cuddles, reassurance and settling
  • Conversations with families about sleep, meals and how the child is feeling
  • Opportunities for children to choose a play space or activity
  • Gentle transitions from home into the learning environment

These small rituals help children build confidence. Over time, a familiar greeting, song or comfort routine can help the room feel predictable and secure.

For parents, this continuity can be especially reassuring. Starting daycare in Liverpool is a significant transition for the whole family, and we take the time to build trust gradually.

Attachment-informed care built on relationships

Babies and toddlers learn through relationships. Before children can confidently investigate a new material, join a group experience or move through a transition, they need to feel emotionally safe.

In the Penguins room, educators focus on creating warm, responsive relationships by:

  • Listening carefully to children’s sounds, gestures, facial expressions and movements
  • Responding sensitively when a child needs comfort or assistance
  • Using calm voices and respectful interactions
  • Offering encouragement during new experiences
  • Getting to know each child’s routines, preferences and family background
  • Working with families to maintain continuity between home and the centre

This is the heart of attachment-informed care: creating a secure base from which children can explore, play and learn.

The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia, Version 2.0 recognises that secure, respectful and reciprocal relationships support children’s identity, wellbeing and learning. Its first learning outcome focuses on children developing a strong sense of identity, including feeling safe, secure and supported.

You can read more about our approach through our Early Years Learning Framework and programs.

A daily rhythm that follows each child

A daily rhythm gives children a reassuring sense of what may happen next, while still allowing flexibility for individual needs. In the Penguins room, routines are not simply tasks to complete. They are opportunities for connection, communication, independence and learning.

A typical rhythm may include:

Arrival and settling

Educators greet each child and connect with families about the morning. Some children may move quickly into play, while others may need extra reassurance. We respect both responses.

Indoor exploration

Children are supported to investigate open-ended resources, books, music, movement experiences and sensory materials. Educators observe what captures each child’s attention and use those interests to extend learning.

Meals and feeding routines

Mealtimes support more than nutrition. They are opportunities for children to practise communication, social connection and emerging independence. Families can share important information about feeding preferences, allergies, routines and cultural practices so care remains as consistent as possible.

Nappy changes and personal care

Personal care routines are handled respectfully and calmly. Educators talk with children throughout the process, helping them understand what is happening and building early language around their bodies, hygiene and wellbeing.

Sleep and rest

Babies and toddlers have different sleep needs. Some children may nap once, others more than once, and some may need quiet rest instead. We work in partnership with families to understand each child’s sleep cues and familiar settling rituals.

Outdoor play and movement

Movement is essential in the early years. Depending on the program and the children’s needs, outdoor experiences may encourage crawling, walking, climbing, pushing, carrying, balancing and exploring the natural environment.

Stories, songs and connection

Shared books, songs, fingerplays and conversations support early communication. Even before children use many words, they participate through eye contact, gestures, sounds, facial expressions and movement.

Afternoon transitions and collection

As the day winds down, educators support children through calm transitions and share meaningful information with families about meals, sleep, play and learning.

There is no single “perfect” schedule for every child. The goal is a predictable but responsive rhythm that supports wellbeing and makes space for each child’s natural pace.

Sensory play: learning through the whole body

For babies and toddlers, sensory play is a powerful way to understand the world. Children learn by touching, looking, listening, moving, grasping, dropping, repeating and experimenting.

In the Penguins room, sensory experiences may invite children to explore:

  • Different textures, such as soft fabrics, natural materials and safe tactile resources
  • Sounds through music, songs, shakers and gentle instruments
  • Colours, shapes and patterns
  • Water and other age-appropriate messy play experiences
  • Mirrors and reflective surfaces
  • Movement, balance and changes in body position
  • Safe opportunities for filling, emptying, transferring and stacking

Educators carefully consider each child’s age, abilities, stage of development and individual interests. Experiences are offered with meticulous attention to supervision, hygiene and safety, and resources are selected to be appropriate for the children participating.

The purpose is not to create a perfect finished product. Sensory play is about the process: the look of wonder, the repeated action, the pause before trying something new and the satisfaction of making something happen.

A toddler pouring water from one container to another may be exploring capacity and cause and effect. A baby reaching for a textured object may be strengthening coordination and focus. A child listening to a familiar song may be developing communication, memory and emotional security.

This is how we pair fun and learning every day.

Learning in everyday moments

The Penguins program is informed by the EYLF, which recognises that curriculum includes planned and unplanned experiences, routines, interactions and relationships.

For children aged 0–3, learning may be visible through:

  • Identity: Building trust with familiar educators and communicating needs
  • Wellbeing: Developing physical confidence, emotional security and healthy routines
  • Communication: Listening to stories, responding to songs and using gestures or emerging language
  • Confident learning: Exploring objects, testing ideas and persisting with new challenges
  • Connection: Beginning to participate in relationships, group experiences and the wider community

An early learning centre is not only a place where children complete activities. It is an environment where ordinary moments are thoughtfully recognised as opportunities to build capacity.

A nappy change can become a conversation. A meal can become a social experience. A transition outdoors can become a lesson in movement and anticipation. A cuddle can help a child feel secure enough to return to play.

Working in partnership with families

Families are children’s first and most influential educators. Your knowledge of your child helps us provide care that is more personalised, respectful and consistent.

At Rainbow Hut, we value open communication and invite families to share:

  • Your child’s interests and comfort strategies
  • Sleep and feeding routines
  • Important words from your home language
  • Cultural practices, family traditions and individual beliefs
  • Developmental changes or new milestones
  • Questions, feedback and suggestions about your child’s experience

Our family communication approach includes daily conversations, learning stories and digital updates through the centre’s communication platforms. For babies and toddlers, communication books may also help families keep track of meals, sleep and toileting throughout the day.

We believe strong relationships are built over time. As a family-owned service, we value long-term connections with children and families: not just during the first months of care, but throughout the years that follow.

Colourful, inclusive design reflecting a playful and welcoming early learning environment

A welcoming place for every family

Liverpool is a diverse and vibrant community, and we believe this should be reflected in the early learning environment.

We welcome families from different cultural, linguistic, religious and family backgrounds. We respect individual beliefs and encourage families to share the traditions, languages, music, stories and experiences that are meaningful to them.

Our commitment to inclusion also means recognising each child’s unique capabilities and providing equitable opportunities to participate. Every child should feel valued, represented and supported as they develop their sense of belonging.

This commitment extends across all three Rainbow Hut locations: Liverpool, Blacktown and Prestons.
