September has brought brighter mornings, gentle breezes and many precious opportunities for fun and learning at Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre. As spring arrives across Liverpool, Blacktown, Prestons and surrounding communities, our children have been exploring the changing season through play, creativity, movement, relationships and curious investigations.
As a small family-owned childcare service, we value the long-term relationships we build with children and families. Each day, we take time to notice children’s interests, listen to their ideas and create meaningful experiences that support their growth. Our children-first policy guides the way we plan, teach, communicate and care.
This month’s learning has been guided by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), which supports children’s learning from birth to five years and their transition to school. Through intentional teaching and play-based experiences, we have been nurturing confidence, independence, communication, wellbeing and a growing sense of belonging.
Spring Learning Through Nature and Play
Spring provides a wonderful invitation to slow down and notice the world around us. At our early learning centre in Liverpool, children have been encouraged to observe seasonal changes and explore nature using all their senses.
Our spring experiences have included:
- Looking closely at leaves, flowers, soil and natural textures
- Listening for birds, insects and the sounds of the outdoor environment
- Exploring light, shadows, wind and changing weather
- Using natural materials for creative art and construction
- Practising balance, climbing, running and coordination outdoors
- Talking about how plants, animals and people are connected
- Caring for our learning environments and showing respect for nature
These experiences may look simple, but they offer rich opportunities for learning. A nature walk can develop vocabulary, observation and concentration. Water play can introduce early concepts of pouring, filling, flow and measurement. Gardening can help children understand responsibility, patience and change over time.
Most importantly, spring play is joyful. Children learn best when they are actively involved, making choices, asking questions and having fun with the people around them.
The Australian Early Years Learning Framework recognises the importance of play-based learning and natural environments in supporting children’s wellbeing, identity, communication and connection with the world.
Penguins Room: Discovering Through the Senses
Our Penguins room supports children from birth to three years. For babies and toddlers, September has been a month of sensory discovery, secure relationships and growing independence.
Young children learn through touch, movement, repetition and warm interactions with trusted educators. Our educators have carefully created opportunities for children to explore spring in ways that are appropriate for their age, development and individual interests.
Some of the highlights in the Penguins room have included:
- Sensory baskets containing safe, natural objects with different colours and textures
- Water-based play with cups, scoops and containers
- Spring-inspired music and movement, including songs about animals, rain and gardens
- Outdoor discovery, where children could feel the breeze, notice shadows and observe the garden
- Creative experiences using large brushes, washable paint and child-safe materials
- Storytelling and shared books about spring, friendship and caring for living things
For our youngest learners, every experience is an opportunity to build capacity. Grasping a brush supports fine motor development. Crawling across a mat or navigating an outdoor space builds physical confidence. Reaching for a natural object encourages coordination and curiosity.
Just as importantly, these experiences strengthen relationships. When an educator responds to a child’s gesture, sound or expression, the child learns that their communication matters. This sense of trust and belonging is an important foundation for future learning.

Koalas Room: Growing Confidence for School and Life
Our Koalas room is designed for children aged three to five years. This month, children have been extending their thinking through collaborative projects, imaginative play, early literacy, numeracy and school readiness experiences.
The Koalas have been particularly engaged in exploring how things grow and change. Children have shared ideas about gardens, insects, weather and the signs of spring they notice in their homes and community. Educators have supported these conversations by introducing new vocabulary, encouraging predictions and inviting children to represent their ideas through drawing, construction and storytelling.
Highlights from the Koalas room have included:
- Creating spring pictures, patterns and collages with natural materials
- Sorting, counting and comparing leaves, seeds and other objects
- Practising name writing, letter recognition and mark-making
- Developing stories about gardens, animals and imaginary adventures
- Building with blocks and loose parts to create homes, habitats and community spaces
- Participating in group discussions, turn-taking and collaborative decision-making
- Strengthening self-help skills such as packing away, managing belongings and preparing for transitions
Our School Readiness Program is not about rushing children into formal schooling. It is about helping children feel capable, connected and ready to approach new experiences with confidence.
School readiness includes:
- Emotional wellbeing and the ability to seek support
- Communication and listening skills
- Independence and self-help routines
- Early literacy and numeracy understandings
- Physical coordination and fine motor development
- Positive relationships with peers and educators
- Curiosity, persistence and a willingness to have a go
At our early learning centre in Liverpool, we believe that fun and learning belong together. Children can practise important skills while playing shop, creating a garden, telling a story or working with friends.

Learning Together in a Diverse Community
One of the most meaningful parts of September has been seeing children learn with and from one another. Rainbow Hut celebrates multiculturalism, diversity and individual beliefs because every family contributes something valuable to our community.
Children have been encouraged to share family experiences, languages, traditions and ideas. These conversations help children understand that families may look, sound and celebrate differently, while still sharing common values such as kindness, care, respect and belonging.
We aim to create an inclusive environment where:
- Every child’s identity is recognised and valued
- Families are welcomed as genuine partners in learning
- Individual beliefs and cultural practices are respected
- Children are supported to express themselves in different ways
- Educators listen carefully to family knowledge and feedback
- Friendship, empathy and respect are embedded in everyday routines
Our values at Rainbow Hut include open communication, professionalism, personalised support and appreciation for diversity. These values are reflected not only in special events, but also in everyday moments: greeting families warmly, listening to children’s ideas, supporting friendships and making space for everyone to participate.
Working in Partnership With Families
Learning does not stop when children leave the centre. Families are an essential part of each child’s learning journey, and we welcome your observations, questions and feedback.
Throughout September, families have been able to stay connected through conversations with educators, learning stories, photos, videos and daily updates. Our family communication approach helps families see the learning behind everyday experiences and continue conversations at home.
You might extend spring learning at home by:
- Going on a short listening walk
- Collecting fallen leaves for sorting or collage-making
- Watching clouds and inventing stories
- Helping your child water a plant
- Talking about changes in the weather
- Reading a spring-themed book together
- Asking, “What did you notice?” rather than looking for a right answer
When families and educators share information, children benefit from a consistent and encouraging approach. This partnership helps us understand each child more deeply and respond to their interests, strengths and emerging needs.
Looking Ahead
As September comes to a close, we are proud of the learning, relationships and confidence that have blossomed across both rooms. From the Penguins’ sensory discoveries to the Koalas’ growing independence, every child has been supported through nurturing, purposeful and joyful experiences.
