As the crisp winter air settles over Liverpool, Blacktown, and Prestons, our focus shifts from the sun-drenched playgrounds to the warm, inviting corners of our classrooms. At Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre, Liverpool, we believe that every season brings a unique opportunity for growth-oriented discovery. Winter, with its cozy vibes and rhythmic raindrops, is the perfect time to dive deep into the world of letters, sounds, and stories.
As a family-owned small business, we pride ourselves on creating a nourishing environment where children feel safe to explore their full potential. Literacy isn't just about reading a book; it’s about shaping young minds to communicate, imagine, and connect with the world around them. Our meticulous approach to the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) ensures that even when we are indoors, the learning never stops, it just gets more creative!
In this post, we’re sharing five of our favorite indoor literacy games that we use in our Penguins (0-3 years) and Koalas (3-5 years) rooms to keep the "fun" and "learning" paired perfectly together.
Why Literacy Matters in the Early Years
Before we jump into the games, it is important to understand the "why" behind our meticulous curriculum. Literacy is the foundation of all future learning. By encouraging a love for language early on, we are building capacity in our children to become confident learners.
At Rainbow Hut Early Learning Centre Liverpool, we view our role as a partnership with families. Whether your child is at our Liverpool, Blacktown, or Prestons location, they are part of a community that values multiculturalism, diversity, and the unique beliefs of every family.

1. The Alphabet Bean Bag Toss: Physical Literacy
Who says literacy has to be a seated activity? In our Koalas room, we love combining gross motor skills with letter recognition.
How to play:
We spread out large, colourful floor mats or paper plates, each marked with a different letter of the alphabet. Each child is given a soft bean bag. When an educator calls out a letter, or a sound for our older children, the child tosses the bean bag onto the corresponding letter.
The Nurturing Benefit:
This game helps children associate sounds with symbols in a low-pressure, high-energy environment. It’s particularly great for active learners who find it easier to focus when their bodies are moving. It’s all about making learning feel like the most exciting game in the world!
2. Storytelling Stones: Unleashing Imagination
In the quiet, nourishing atmosphere of our reading corners, we often use "Storytelling Stones." These are smooth, hand-painted stones featuring various images, a sun, a house, a cat, or a rainbow.
How to play:
Children take turns picking a stone from a soft velvet bag. Whatever image they draw becomes the next part of a collaborative story. "Once upon a time, there was a precious kitten…" says the first child. The next child pulls a "rain" stone and adds, "…who got caught in the winter rain!"
The Nurturing Benefit:
This activity fosters expressive language and sequencing skills. It also honors our commitment to multiculturalism; children often weave in elements of their own home life and cultural backgrounds into these stories, creating a beautiful tapestry of shared imagination.

3. The Alphabet Soup Sensory Bin
For our younger friends in the Penguins room, literacy starts with sensory exploration. We create a "Winter Alphabet Soup" using a large bin filled with blue-tinted rice, cotton ball "snowflakes," and large plastic letters.
How to play:
Children "fish" for letters using scoops or their hands. As they pull out a letter, we describe it: "Oh, you found the letter 'S'! It’s curvy like a snake!"
The Nurturing Benefit:
Sensory play is vital for brain development. By touching and feeling the shapes of letters, children are preparing their fine motor skills for later writing. This meticulous attention to detail in our Early Learning Centre Liverpool programs ensures that even the smallest discoveries lead to big milestones.
4. Phonics Hopscotch: Stepping into Sounds
Using colorful tape on our indoor floors, we create a hopscotch grid. Instead of numbers, we fill the squares with letters that represent different phonemes (sounds).
How to play:
As the children hop through the grid, they must say the sound of the letter they land on. For a challenge, we ask them to think of a word that starts with that sound. "B… B… Ball!"
The Nurturing Benefit:
This game is a staple of our School Readiness Program. It bridges the gap between simple letter recognition and the phonics skills they will need in primary school. We focus on building a long-term relationship with each child's learning journey, ensuring they leave our care feeling capable and ready.

5. Puppet Theater: Expressing Individual Beliefs
Our purpose-built facilities at Liverpool, Blacktown, and Prestons feature wonderful dramatic play areas. Puppets are a fantastic tool for literacy because they allow children to "speak" through a character.
How to play:
We set up a simple stage and provide a variety of puppets representing different cultures and animals. Children are encouraged to put on a "show" for their peers. We might provide a prompt, like "How does the bear feel about the winter snow?"
The Nurturing Benefit:
Dramatic play builds social-emotional literacy. It helps children understand perspectives and practice dialogue. At Rainbow Hut, we place a strong value on respect for individual beliefs, and puppet play is a safe space for children to express their unique voices.
A Partnership for the Future
